We at the Burke Library were thrilled to collaborate with the Center for Earth Ethics in hosting a book launch on Jan. 28th in celebration of Catherine Coleman Flowers’s new book Holy Ground: on Activism, Environmental Justice, and Finding Hope.
A multidisciplinary scholar and MacArthur “Genius Grant” recipient, Flowers spoke with CEE founder and director Karenna Gore before an audience of several dozen community members who then had the opportunity to ask questions and participate in an engaged dialogue in the glow of the Reading Room. We were already impressed with Flowers’s research in her previous book Waste: One Woman’s Fight Against America’s Dirty Secret which drew attention to structural inequalities in access to water and waste disposal across the United States.
The Center for Earth Ethics provided lovely refreshments and the conversation was inspirational indeed. Consecrating the Reading Room in a ceremony with a conch shell among CEE friends made it a particularly moving honor to hold this event in our space. -CB
