Archivist Pick: Artistic Encounters in the Archives

We recently joined the Archivist’s Pick exhibition series hosted by the Rare Book & Manuscript Library. This installation features six sets of materials drawn from newly processed Chinese and Chinese American archival collections, united by a shared thread of artistic expression. From dance to music, and from writing to photography, these works form a kind of treasure trove where art and archives intersect, illuminating the richness and diversity of the archival and special collections held at Starr. While we look forward to welcoming our readers back in Kent Hall in the summer of 2027, we invite you in the meantime to enjoy a selection of highlights on view at the RBML.

Archivist Pick exhibition at the RBML: Artistic Encounters in the Archives: Selections from the C. V. Starr East Asian Library

On view at Butler Library, 6th Floor, Monday through Friday, 10am-4pm

Special thanks to archivist colleagues at the Rare Book and Manuscript Library, Yekaterina Davidenko and Yingwen Huang, for their invitation and installation support.

  1. There is an interesting story hidden inside the Center for US-China Arts Exchange Records (with 3 folders) related to the dancer Li Cunxin 李存信, who was the first student of the famous Beijing Dance Academy selected to study in Huston Ballet in 1980, then defected and with the help of the VP GHW Bush, he stayed in Huston and marred to the American Dancer Ben Stevenson in 1981. Later Li became the Artistic Director of the Queensland Bullet from 2012-2023 in Australia. A 2009 Australian film: Mao’s Last Dancer was based on his story.
