Studies in Applied Linguistics & TESOL (SALT) is pleased to announce the publication of Volume 26, Issue 1.
The issue begins with two literature reviews. Jessica Coombs Brantigan’s “Socializing Language, Behavior, and Emotion in Parent–Child Interaction: A Review of Literature” examines how parents socialize children’s language, behavior, and emotion through everyday family interaction. Cicely Anne Rude’s “Conversational Involvement in Interaction: A Literature Review” traces how conversational involvement has been conceptualized across disciplines, focusing on how participants display and interpret engagement in interaction.
The issue then turns to second language assessment through the forum “Expanding Constructs in Second Language Assessment,” introduced by Soo Hyoung Joo and Daniel Eskin. The forum explores how language ability can be defined and assessed in ways that more closely reflect the demands of 21st-century communication. Kedi Mo’s “Examining HSK 3.0 Before Implementation: A Validity-Oriented Review of Linguistic Features and Task Structure” considers whether HSK 3.0’s revised linguistic framework and task structure may address validity concerns raised about HSK 2.0. Ali Ebrahimpourlighvani’s “Critical Thinking in the Context of Speaking Assessment” calls for a broader view of academic speaking assessment that accounts for how test-takers use language to analyze, evaluate, and respond to information. Daniel Eskin’s “Assessing Turn-Taking in Paired Speaking Tests: Differences in Turn Allocation Practices in a Collaborative Task across Cambridge English™ Exams” examines turn allocation in paired speaking tests and offers suggestions for refining Interactive Communication descriptors.
The issue also includes Yijing Jiang’s review of Maria Garraffa and Greta Mazzaggio’s Pragmatics in the Health Sciences. In the issue’s interview, Ashley Beccia, Jessica Coombs Brantigan, and Abby Massaro speak with APPLE Lecture speaker Dr. Steven Thorne. A video of the interview can be viewed on YouTube.
